Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Broadcaster, Cal VanSingel

Induction Year: 2019 - Gene Young Service Award

Cal Van Singel and Jon Russell have been fixtures on the Muskegon-area airwaves for nearly two dozen years, calling more than 1,100 high school football and basketball games in total. The duo are very well-respected for their promotion of all area schools and both boys and girls sports.

Russell, a 1979 Muskegon High School graduate, is the play-by-play man, while Van Singel, a 1977 Grant High School graduate, is the color commentator. Russell and Van Singel became a radio team in the 1990s at WSHN in Fremont. They moved their act to WLCS in the early 2000s and have been fixtures in the area sports scene ever since. seemingly everywhere and always present at the big games. Russell is a longtime radio guy, both on-air and in sales, while Van Singel is co-owner of Van Singel Farms, a large-scale vegetable operation in Grant, MI.

The Voice of the Muskegon Risers

Cal VanSingel, along with Jon Russell, is a broadcasting tandem for the Muskegon Risers, providing live play-by-play coverage of their games, both on KLBB and Facebook Live. Cal VanSingel and Jon Russell have a long-standing broadcasting partnership in the Muskegon community, known for their live commentary and in-game insights.

    The Muskegon Risers' games are often live-streamed on the KLLB network, with VanSingel and Russell making the calls.

    You can also find their broadcasts on the Muskegon Risers' Facebook page, providing a way for fans to follow the action live.

    The team competes in the National Premier Soccer League for its outdoor season and Major Arena Soccer League 2 for its indoor season.
